How One Local Business Is Adapting to Our New Normal

The entire world is being affected by the current COVID-19 health and economic crisis. One group getting hit the hardest by the recent economic downturn is small, independently-owned businesses. Now more than ever we appreciate loyal patrons who are going out of their way to support the small businesses in their communities.

Part of the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) includes using “drive-thru, pickup or delivery options” instead of eating at bars, restaurants, and food courts. It’s not just national chains that are able to do curbside pickups or online deliveries—many independent businesses have adopted this service to continue serving their communities. Beyond client Burge’s Hickory Smoked Turkeys & Hams, is a small independently-owned operation that is working around the clock to offer all the options necessary in today’s turbulent times.

Since 1962, Burge’s has sold barbeque, burgers, and ice cream with a special level of service. The Lewisville, Arkansas dairyette started even earlier with Alden Burge smoking turkeys in his backyard for family and friends. More than five decades later, the local staple is widely known for its hickory smoked turkeys and hams, big 4th of July celebrations, and was inducted into the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame in 2018. Burge’s now includes two dining locations, but due to the current crisis, is relying heavily on its online side of the business.

Burge’s owner Jeff Voyles and his team are doing everything in their power to stay afloat—from offering easy pickup for call-in orders to maintaining their robust e-commerce website with national shipping options. By providing the comfort of a homecooked meal to people across the nation, the Burge’s team is doing their part to keep communities connected during this challenging time.

“Now, with the reach of our internet site, smokedturkeys.com, our customer base has grown to include families and businesses in every state. But we still take pride in operating just as we always have…with a mission to provide the very finest in smoked meats, with your satisfaction guaranteed.”

Another important tip other small business owners can learn from Burge’s is to remember to share updated hours and business information with your loyal customers. Social media is key for this, and perhaps try a website pop-up banner similar to the one Burge’s currently showcases on their homepage:

Beyond is proud to partner with merchants like Jeff Voyles, who exemplify the work ethic and commitment local businesses bring to our communities. Not to mention, in the words of Beyond Team Lead Randy Atkisson, “the smoked turkeys are OUTSTANDING!”
